Subject {L-T-P / C} : PA1111 : Design Fundamental { 0-0-3 / 2}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module-I (6 hrs) / Introduction to basic elements of design: Primary elements: points, lines, planes, volumes primary shapes, regular and irregular shapes, and forms Assignment(s) on the generation of elements of design.

Module-II (12 hrs) / Composition of design elements: Ordering principles – axis, symmetry, hierarchy, datum, rhythm, repetition Organizational principles – centralized, radial, linear, cluster, grid
Transformation of solids – additive, subtractive, dimensional (3D elements) Assignment(s) on the application of ordering and organizational principles in the composition of design elements (2D and 3D).

Module-III (6 hrs) / Articulation of design elements: Surface articulation, articulation of forms and material texture, appreciation of contrast with colours Assignment(s) on objects/artefacts (e.g., furniture) exploring articulation.

Module-IV (6 hrs) / Proportioning systems in design: Proportion and Scale – material proportion, structural proportion, manufactured proportion, proportioning system: golden section, regulating lines, modular, visual scale, human scale Assignment(s) exploring proportioning systems.

Module-V (6 hrs) / Design by Analogy: Introduction to varied types of analogy Assignment(s) on the application of concepts of analogy in the design of object/artefacts.

Course Objective

1 .

To understand the basic elements of design.

2 .

To understand the fundamental rules and strategies of composition and articulation of design elements and relationship between form and space.

3 .

To design different configurations of 2- and 3-dimensional elements.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. Ability to identify the basic elements of design.
2. Ability to articulate and compose design elements based on design guidelines.
3. Ability to design with the understanding of the relationship between form and space.
4. Ability to apply technical skills required to communicate design composition, such as drawing, painting, cutting, and others.
