Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I [4 Hours]
Brief overview of air transportation, Airport Engineering, Key terminologies, Different functions of Airports, classification of airports - ICAO standards, various organizations related to aviation and airports, and their functions and responsibilities.

Module II [6 Hours]
Aircraft Characteristics and components, their functions, basic concepts of movements and relevance, Airport Reference and Airport Marking, Critical Dimensions, Types of Engines, Gear Configurations, ICAO recommendation, Types of Speed, Wake Turbulence, Standard Temperatures and Pressure for Operation, Engine types, Various types of Loads, Relationship between Pay Load and Range.

Module III [8 hours]
Airport components- Height zoning and land use zoning, turning zone, Classification of obstruction, Imaginary surfaces, Zoning laws Runways- orientation and geometric design, Classification of Runway, Basic concepts of runway types, Runway orientation, Estimation of runway length, Basic runway length and corrections, Basic concept of taxiway layout, Factors affecting the layout, Concept of geometric design, Classification of taxiway, Design of taxiway, Holding apron, End-around taxiway.

Module IV [6 Hours]
Runway and Taxiway Marking, Airport Lighting and Marking, Height guidance, Visual Aids, Challenges, Visibility and Approach Path, Visual Approach Slope Aids, Precision Approach Path Indicator, Lighting on different components of Runway and Taxiway, and Considerations for Runway and Taxiway Lightings.

Module V [6 Hours]
Basic Concept of Terminal area, layout, Site selection, Classification of terminal area, Parking, Design of Apron and Hargar, Airport Planning, Airport System Planning, Delphi method, Airport Master Plan, Airport Project Plan, Air Traffic Demand Forecasting, Various Methodologies to Forecast Air Traffic, Design principles of critical, semi-critical, and non-critical airport pavements.

Module VI [6 Hours]
Airfield pavement, Design factors, critical stresses, Materials selection, Concept of Airfield Pavement design, FAA Pavement design, FAARFIELD program, drainage – design life, Life Cycle Assessment. Environmental Impacts of Airport, Quantification of aircraft and airport noise, Airport Noise profile at different times, Points of measure, Mitigation strategies
