Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE4304 : Pavement Materials { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module-I: Soils: Origin and classification, particle size distribution and grading, and key engineering properties such as Atterberg limits, compaction characteristics, strength (CBR/resilient modulus), subgrade suitability, performance through soil stabilization techniques, including mechanical and chemical methods for enhanced strength, and durability. [8 hours]

Module–II: Aggregates: Sources, production, grading, and blending to achieve desired gradation, aggregate properties such as strength, durability, shape, texture, and resistance to wear and polishing through standard tests, ensuring their suitability for use in bituminous and cement concrete mixes for improved load transfer, stability, and long-term pavement performance, [10 hours]

Module-III: Bituminous binders and mixes: physical and rheological properties, grading, and suitability for varying climatic and traffic conditions, testing methods for binders and mixes, types of bituminous mixes, and principles of mix design, performance characteristics such as stability, durability, rutting, fatigue, and moisture susceptibility for long-term pavement performance. [10 hours]

Module-IV: Materials for cement concrete and semi-rigid pavements: cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures, and their role in determining strength and durability, mix design principles for concrete and stabilized layers, along with evaluation of performance characteristics such as strength, stiffness, and durability, non-conventional and emerging pavement materials (e.g., industrial by-products, recycled materials, geosynthetics), highlighting their applications, benefits, and practical limitations in pavement engineering.. [8 hours]

Course Objective

1 .

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of various conventional and non-conventional pavement materials.

2 .

To develop the skills necessary to analyze how physical and mechanical properties influence performance and durability of pavement.

Course Outcome

1 .

CO1: Gain knowledge physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of various pavement materials.
CO2: Demonstrate the ability to select appropriate pavement materials based on characterization using conventional and advanced methods.
CO3: Integrate knowledge of soil and aggregate properties into the application of Granular layers of pavement.
CO4: Apply the principles of mix design for both bituminous and cement concrete, utilizing appropriate methods.
CO5: Demonstrate the ability to assess the performance and sustainability of advanced and recycled materials in enhancing pavement stability and durability.
