Syllabus

Module I- Concrete as Construction Material & Concrete Making Materials—I: Cement: Constituent materials, cement production, cement compositions, cement classifications, Supplementary cementing materials, Microstructure of cement hydrates. [6 hrs]

Module II- Concrete Making Materials—II: Aggregate Aggregate classifications, Sieve analysis, Alkali Aggregate reactions, Mineral Admixtures and classifications, Chemical admixtures and classifications, working mechanisms of admixtures. [7 hrs]

Module III- Properties of Fresh Concrete: Production of concrete, Rready mix concrete, Pumping of concrete, Steps of concreting, Fresh concrete, workability and its measure, Rheometer and Rheology of concrete. [7 hrs]

Module IV- Properties of Hardened Concrete: Mechanical and elastic properties of concrete, Factors affecting the properties of concrete, Shrinkage and creep, Durability of concrete and its measurement. [6 hrs]

Module V- Testing Methods & Types of Concrete: Destructive and Non-destructive testing methods, Corrosion resistant concrete, Self-compacting concrete, Fibre reinforced concrete, Geo-polymer concrete, Concreting under different weather conditions. [6 hrs]

Module VI- Mix Design: Mix design of concrete, Assessment and Quality Control of concrete. [5 hrs]

To understand the function and effects of cement, aggregate,admixture in concrete and their properties

To understand concrete as a materials and its properties

To evaluate concrete as a building material by implementing various engineering concepts applied in field of Civil engineering.

To understand the norms and their basis given in codes for mix design and quality assessment of concrete and its constituents

1. This course will help students to understand the basic principles underlying concrete science and engineering.
2. Understand the properties and behavior of constituent materials of concrete (cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures) and their influence on the performance of concrete.
3. The students will achieve knowledge regarding mix design and the assessment process of concrete quality.
4. The students will be able to understand the concept in dealing with common concrete issues and the possible mitigation methodologies in the field as an engineer.
5. The students will gain the knowledge regarding destructive and non-destructive testing procedures of concrete.
