Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE2102 : Mechanics of Soil { 3-0-0 / 3}

Subject Nature : Theory

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Soil properties and classification: Origin of soils and types, Soil as three phase system. Soil consistency, sensitivity and thixotropy, Classification of soil,-fine and course grained soil. [8 hours]

Module 2 :

Soil compaction: Principles, water content – dry unit weight relationships, optimum moisture content, maximum dry unit weight, factors affecting compaction. Effects of compaction on density, shear strength and permeability. Field compaction methods. [6 hours]

Module 3 :

Permeability: Soil-water systems – capillarity, flow, Darcy’s law, permeability and tests for its determination, Permeability of stratified soils, estimation of permeability in the field, piping, quicksand condition, seepage, flow nets. [8 hours]

Module 4 :

Shear strength of soil: Coulomb’s law, Mohr’s stress circle, strength envelop and failure conditions, Direct and triaxial shear tests and unconfined compression tests, Effect of pore pressure. [8 hours]

Module 5 :

Soil exploration: Boring, Sampling, SPT and related corrections, stability of slopes. [6 hours]

Course Objective

1 .

Understand the use of three phase system in soil mechanics and estimation of soil properties using three phase system.

2 .

Understand the role of water in soil behavior and estimation of soil stresses, permeability, soil compaction and quantity of seepage including flow net.

3 .

Understand the importance of soil stress distribution and stress influence due to various types of loads.

4 .

Understand the effect of drainage conditions on appropriate soil strength parameters along with the importance of site investigation.

Course Outcome

1 .

Understand the importance of geotechnical engineering in civil engineering and do proper soil classification and three-phase systems to solve the problems.

2 .

Understand the principles related to the field compaction method.

3 .

Solve any practice problems related to Soil compaction, soil stress estimation, permeability, and seepage, including flow net diagram.

4 .

Estimate appropriate soil strength parameters with respect to the drainage conditions.

5 .

Understand the importance of soil investigation for any civil engineering construction.
