Module 1 :

Introduction; Building: Classification, Construction Process; Stones: Classification, Stone Quarrying, Application, Deterioration and Preservation; Bricks (Clay and Fly ash) and Blocks: Classification, Composition, Brick Making Process, Properties, Tests on Bricks, Uses

Module 2 :

(10 hours)
Tiles: Classification, Uses, Manufacturing Process, Tests on Tiles; Glass for Buildings: Manufacture, Classification, Treatment, Uses, Testing for Quality; Geosynthetics: Types and Application; Steel: Working, Treatment, Application, Types, Properties, Handling, Testing; Timber: Types and Uses; Lime: Manufacturing, Classification, Storage and Handling, Tests for Lime.

Module 3 :

(6 hours)
Cement Concrete: Cement, Pozollanas, Sand, Aggregate, Water, Plain and Reinforced Cement Concrete, Mix Design

Building system: Components of a building and Building Specifications; Foundations: Function, Types: Shallow and Deep; Masonry: Stone Masonry: History, Classification and Brick Masonry: History, Components, Terms, Types of Bonds, Tools, Deterioration

Module 5 :

(8 hours)
Walls, Floors: Introduction, Types: Soft and Hard; Roofs: History, Components, Types; Doors and Windows: Parts and Classification; Stairs: Parts, Classification; Formwork and scaffolding: Requirement, Types, Design, Deficiencies; Pointing: Definitions, Suitability, Types; Plastering: Definition, Types of mortar, Types of Plaster finishes, Defects; Damp Proofing

Course Objective

1 .

Develop expertise in material properties and applications: Equip students with the knowledge to analyze and select appropriate building materials, including traditional and modern options, for various construction needs.

2 .

Enhance skills in concrete mix design: Provide students with the ability to design effective concrete mixes applying both plain and reinforced concrete techniques.

3 .

Foster practical understanding of building components and enhance students' ability to select required type of the building components for construction.

Course Outcome

1 .

Classify buildings; evaluate and understand the making process of building materials like stones, bricks, and blocks for construction.

2 .

Understand manufacturing process and classification of the construction materials such as steel, and glass, tiles, geosynthetics, lime and their applications in buildings.

3 .

Understand the different properties and functions of materials used in concrete and will also be able to design and analyze plain and reinforced concrete mixes for structural use.

4 .

Understand different building systems and foundations, focusing on masonry techniques.

5 .

Understand the types and selection criteria for different building components i.e. walls, roofs, doors, formwork, scaffolding, and damp proofing in construction.
