Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE6531 : Air Quality Management { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I 8 HOURS
Structure of atmosphere, chemical and photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Ozone chemistry- formation and depletion of ozone layer, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur.
Module II 10 HOURS
Filters, gravitational, centrifugal – multiple type cyclones, prediction of collection efficiency, pressure drop, wet collectors, Electrostatic Precipitation theory-particle charging-particle collection –ESP design procedure. Absorption: principles, description of equipment-packed and plate columns, design and performance equations. Adsorption: principal adsorbents, equipment descriptions – PSA – adsorption cycle-solvent recovery system-continuous rotary bed-fluidized bed, Design and performance equations.
Module III 8 HOURS
Acid rain mechanism of formation and effects. Photochemical smog, and sulfurous smog. Green house effect/global warming, green house gases, effects. Absorption: principles, description of equipment-packed and plate columns, design and performance equations. Incinertion: hydrocarbon incinertion kinetis, equipment description, design and performance equations.
Module IV 8 HOURS
Control methods – Processes based control mechanisms – mineral products – asphaltic concrete, cement plants and glass manufacturing plants Thermal power plants, Petroleum refining and storage plants, Fertilizers, Pharmaceuticals and wood processing industry.
Module V 8 HOURS
Dispersion models and receptor models with their practical applications

Course Objective

1 .

To provide students with a scientific and technical background in air pollution monitoring, pollution control technologies and environmental management.

2 .

Perspective on the air pollution issues

3 .

Understanding of the nature and parameters of Indian air emission and ambient air quality Standards

4 .

To have an indepth knowledge of air quality models

Course Outcome

1 .

1) Concept of dispersion of air pollution in the atmosphere
2) Design of air pollution control equipments
3) Can evaluate air quality management and analyze the causes and effects of air pollution
4) To develop a broad overview understanding of the strategies, regulations and policies to manage air pollution.
5) To be able to perform air quality modelling
