Module I: Water quality parameters and indices (8 hours)
Water Quality - Physical, Chemical and Biological Parameters of Water Water Quality
Requirement - Potable Water Quality Standards, Wastewater Effluent Standards, Water
Quality Indices
Module II: Conventional Water treatment methods (8 hours)
Water Purification in Natural Systems Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Treatment - Unit
Operations - Unit Processes.
Module III: Water treatment methods (10 hours)
Aeration and gas transfer Sedimentation, different types of settling, sedimentation tank
design Coagulation and flocculation, coagulation processes, stability of colloids,
destabilization of colloids, destabilization in water and wastewater treatment Filtration -
filtration processes, Hydraulics of flow through porous media, Rate control patterns and
methods, Mathematical model for deep granular filters, slow sand filtration, rapid sand
filtration, precoat filtration
Module IV: Advanced water treatment technologies (10 hours)
Adsorption, adsorption equilibria and adsorption isotherm, rates of adsorption, Sorption
kinetics in batch reactors, continuous reactors, factors affecting adsorption Ion Exchange processes, materials and reactions, methods of operation, Application Membrane Processes,
Reverse osmosis, Ultrafiltration, Electrodyalisis, Disinfection Water and Wastewater
Treatment Processes.

Course Objective

1 .

The aim of this course is to understand various physicochemical methods
for treatment of water & wastewater and to study the principle & design of physical and
chemical treatment units.

Course Outcome

1 .

Outcome- After completion of the course, students will be able to:
CO1: Understand the water quality parameters
CO2: Understand the conventional tretament methods for water purification
CO3: Evaluate various physical and chemical treatment options for treatment of water and wastewater
CO4: Develop in-depth knowledge regarding advance treatment technologies for water and wastewater
CO5: Design various physico- chemical units for the treatment of water and wastewater
