Module 1 :

Module 1 [6 hours]
Introduction to Pavement Evaluation: Purpose of pavement evaluation, Different types of pavement, Selection of appropriate type of pavements, Critical factors for each type, Functions and purpose for various layers, Pavement deterioration pattern, Cost and economics of pavement construction, Repair and rehabilitation.

Module II [6 hours]
Purpose of Pavement Evaluation, Types of evaluation – functional and structural assessment, Classification of Different types of Evaluation, Pavement Inventory, Concept of Serviceability, Pavement Serviceability Index, Pavement Serviceability Rating, Critical threshold for different pavement types

Module III [6 hours]
Pavement Roughness Measurement, Purposes, Factor influencing roughness, Limitations, Classification of roughness measuring system, International Road Roughness Experiment, Concept of International Roughness Index (IRI), Various models for evaluating IRI and operating principle, Contact type Equipment, Non-contact type equipment, Advantages and disadvantages.

Module IV [6 hours]
Frictional Evaluation, Purposes, Friction Indices, Measurement of longitudinal and lateral friction, Concept of slip and friction coefficient, Factors affecting surface friction, Spot and continuous friction measuring system, significance and limitations, Concept of Fixed and variable slip ratio for friction measurement.

Module V [6 hours]
Overlay design of pavement, Concept of Benkelman Beam method as per IRC: 81, Deflection measurement, Corrections, advantages and limitations, Concept of Falling Weight Deflectometer as per IRC 115, Deflection bowl characteristics, Analysis of FWD results, Pavement condition survey, Corrections, Determination of overlay thickness, Economic assessment.

Module VI [6 hours]
Evaluation of pavement materials – Labs and Field, selection of homogenous sections, Destructive and non-destructive tests, Identification of distresses and their severities, Causes for distresses, Appropriate maintenance strategies for distresses, Case studies.

Course Objective

Understand the purpose and methods of pavement evaluation and relevant concepts.

Learn various roughness measurement techniques for pavement condition survey

3 .

Gain knowledge of frictional evaluation methods for various pavement types

4 .

Familiar with overlay design methods and economic viability.

Course Outcome

1 .

After the completion of this course, students will be able to:

CO1: Understand both flexible and rigid pavement maintenance concepts
CO2:Design overlays by different methods
CO3: Acquire data sets required to assess the performance of pavement
CO4: Plan Road maintenance activities for structural and functional evaluation
CO5: Understand the concept of distress and find out the root causes
