Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module-1: Introduction to Transportation Systems Planning Process (4 Hours)
Brief Description of urban and regional transportation systems, Definition of a system, System analysis, scope and limitations.
Module- II: Survey and Data Collection Systems Required for Transportation Planning (8 Hours)
Transportation planning based on system analysis, Survey and analysis of existing traffic conditions.
Module-III Conventional Four-stage Travel Demand Modelling Methods ( 16 Hours)
Models for trip generation, trip distribution, modal split, traffic assignment and analysis for future conditions.
Module-IV Modern Transportation Planning Processes for Sustainable Development (8 Hours)
Plan synthesis and evaluation, Land use modeling, Activity modeling, Behavioural modeling, Freight transportation demand modeling.

Course Objective

1 .

Conversant with scope, limitations and study methodology of transportation systems planning at different levels such as regional, urban, rural etc.

2 .

Familiar with different type of studies carried out to acquire data from primary source (field survey) and secondary sources

3 .

Acquainted with modelling approaches at each stages with numerical examples require to understand the four stage travel demand modelling

4 .

Acquire further understanding on the use of four stage travel demand modelling in different cases such land use, freight, activity and behavioural demand modelling

Course Outcome

1 .

After the completion of this course, students will be able to:
CO1: Describe various planning issues that relate real life transportation problems and to list/find possible solutions.
CO2: Plan for traffic surveys by using designed questionnaires to synthesize large data-base composed from different sources those are used for the development of travel demand models of a transportation network.
CO3: Outline the overall transportation planning process, explain modelling approaches of each step of four stages travel demand modelling, discuss pros and cons of different models.
CO4: Develop trips prediction models using data-base, evaluate the prediction efficiency, explain and categorize models, analyze and recommend best fit models.
CO5: Apply the concept of four stage travel demand modelling to solve real life transportation problems related to land-use pattern and its impact on transportation, freight demand modelling. Also effect of activity and behavior of road infrastructure users on trips demand forecasting and critical review on the state of art of the subject.
