Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module1: Overview: (7 Contact Hours)
Major global energy and environmental issues, Need for green technologies. Environmental impacts of fossil fuel based power generation, Constraints on hydropower and wind energy. National and International Polices.

Module 2: Green chemistry: (10 Contact Hours)
Principles and Methodologies, quantitative/ optimization based frameworks for the design of green chemical synthesis pathways, Pollution prevention in material selection. Energy production via chemical process catalytic distillation transesterification methods Fischer-Tropsch diesel: biochemicals from biomass. Renewable diesel and Sustainable aviation fuel.

Module 3: Modern green energy materials: (7 Contact Hours)
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), biopolymers, bioplastics and composites for microbial fuel cells and Hydrogen generation and storage.

Module 4: Industrial and Natural Ecosystems: (6 Contact Hours)
Ecosystem Classification, Circular Economy, Nature as a Model, System Boundaries, Complex adaptive systems

Module 5: Environmental sustainability: (6 Contact Hours)
Environmental impact assessment, Life cycle assessment, Case studies for sustainable energy, Complexities of cost-benefit analysis in triple bottom line reporting.

Course Objective

1 .

To identify and evaluate major global environmental issues requiring adoption of green technologies

2 .

To understand and apply the underlying principles of green and sustainable technology for chemical synthesis

3 .

To understand and gain practical knowledge of the advancement in green material space

4 .

To conduct comprehensive sustainability assessments such as lifecycle assessments and cost benefit analysis

Course Outcome

At the end of the course, students should be able:
1. To realize the significance of green technologies in today life
2. To understand the various principles and methodologies of green chemistry
3. To comprehend the energy production via chemical process
4. To appreciate the role of sustainability through green technologies
