Module 1 :

Module: 1 Introduction to IPR and its historical background, National IPR Policy, Types of IPR - terms and terminologies, their evolution through amendments and current status ( 8 lectures)

Module: 2 Structure of patent, Patent searching and search tools Patent drafting – Specification and Claims Patent application process, PCT process and filing procedure, Managing Legal Issues of the Patenting Process Enforcement copyright laws and its importance, Trademarks: its importance and applications, trade secrets, Industrial designs, Protection of new varieties of plants, Geographical Indications and Integrated Circuits, Important Cases and Discussions. (12 Lectures)

Module: 3 Introduction to bio-safety Terminologies, Types of containments, Elements of containments, Bio-safety levels, Biosafety categories shipping and transport of regulated biological materials Mechanism of implementing biosafety Containment facilities and biosafety practices: Code of practice Laboratory design and facilities Laboratory equipment Health and medical surveillance Emergency procedures Decontamination and disposal Recombinant safety considerations Risk assessment, Biosafety for GM foods, medical devices, agricultural practices and others (10 lectures)

Module: 4 Bioethics: principles, role of ethics in biotech and biomedical research and innovations, case studies related to ethics of modern advances in biotechnology and biomedical sciences (8 lectures)

Course Objective

1 .

• To gain an understanding of IPR drafting, filing and protection

2 .

• To understand bio-safety in biotechnology and biomedical engineering.

3 .

• To familiarize with the national guidelines on bio-safety.

4 .

• To understand the relevance of ethical practices in biotechnology and biomedical research and Innovations

Course Outcome

• Understand the basics of IPR, procedure of filing, prosecution and protection.
• Learn the national IPR policies especially those related to biotechnology and medical engineering.
• Understand bio-safety issues in biotechnology and medical engineering.
• Learn governmental rules and regulations with respect to bio-safety.
• Understand bio-ethical issues in biotechnology and medical engineering.
