Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I. Animal Biotechnology: Scope, global perspective and new horizons, historical perspective, and economically important livestock breeds, Model animals in animal biotechnology and genetic engineering. [5 hrs]
Module II. Aseptic culture techniques: Media, buffer systems, growth factors, supplements and substrates initiation and maintenance of cell cultures, growth curve of animal cells in culture, animal cell cryopreservation techniques, immortalized culture and development of cell lines. [3hrs]
Module III. Scaling up of animal cell cultures: Suspension culture, bioreactors for animal cell culture, mass transfer in animal cell culture animal tissue culture techniques, organ culture.[7hrs]
Module IV. Animal genetic engineering: Introduction to cloning and gene technology, transfection of animal cell lines, Selectable and non-selectable markers, expression of cloned proteins in animal cells, vaccine development, development of Mabs, Transgenic animals: PN injection, viral vectors, SCNT, SMGT.[6hrs]
Module V. Animal Breed improvement: Economic traits quantitative traits upgrading progeny testing marker assisted selection estrous synchronization AI, superovulation, MOET, embryo splitting, ART, IVF.[7hrs]
Module VI. Application of Animal biotechnology: Animal biotechnology for in vitro and in vivo testing of drugs, toxicity testing of environmental pollutants, production of vaccines, pharmaceutical proteins and secondary metabolites. [5hrs]
Module VII. Bioethical issues related to animal biotechnology.[3hrs]

Course Objective

1 .

To understand the fundamentals of animal biotechnology for animal cell culture, and their genetic modification.

2 .

To apply biotechnology in manipulating animal genome and proteome for human welfare.

3 .

To understand the methods and the importance of breed improvement in animal biotechnology

4 .

To know the bioethical issues involved in animal biotechnology.

Course Outcome

1 .

After the completion of the course student will be able:
1. To learn basics of cell and tissue culture, animal genetic engineering.
2. To understand, identify and apply the appropriate scaling up cell culture technique.
3. To learn and understand animal transgenics, and assisted reproductive technologies in animals
4. To understand the application of biotechnology in manipulating animal genome and proteome for human welfare.
5. To learn and understand the bio-safety issues, government regulations, ethical legal and IPR issues in animal biotechnology.
