Syllabus

Module I
Some brief discussion of theory of elasticity, plane stress and plane strain cases, Aries stress function, mechanisms of crack growth and fracture, Basic modes of fracture, Stress Concentration factor, Griffith's theory of brittle fracture, Stress intensity factor (SIF) and Energy release rate. [8hrs]
Module II
Crack tip displacement, stress distribution at crack tip, Fracture toughness, Theories of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). [6hrs.]
Module III
Irwin's theory of fracture in elastic-plastic materials, Crack tip plastic zone, Theories of elastic plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM). [6hrs.]
Module IV
Types of fatigue loading, Fatigue test methods, Endurance limit and S-N diagram, Various failure relations, factors influencing fatigue strength, Influence of stress concentration, Fatigue crack growth initiation and propagation. [8hrs.]
Module V
Empirical relations describing crack growth, Crack closure, Fatigue Life calculations, methods of increasing fatigue life, Retardation models, Fatigue at low temperature. [8hrs.]

At the end of the course, students will be able to
CO1: Obtain basic ideas about theory of elasticity/plasticity, fatigue and fracture of engineering components.
CO2: Implement the above ideas in the practical field to solve modern engineering problems.
CO3: Design the machine components according to the practical application.
CO4: Train the young engineers for health monitoring the machine components.
CO5: Upgrade the knowledge and implement the concept for new product development.
