Subject Nature : Theory

Coordinator : Vikas Kumar Das

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Process of sedimentary rock formation Sedimentary particles-sources Mechanics and dynamics of particle transport Fluid flow Size concepts, Techniques of size analysis and interpretation Particle morphology and controlling factors Sedimentary structures Classification of sedimentary rocks Morden and ancient sedimentary environments-rivers, lakes, delta, estuaries, shallow & deep marine, aeolian and glacier Diagenesis of siliciclastic and carbonate sediments Reconstruction of paleoenvironments Definition and classification of sedimentary basins Introduction to basin analysis Facies concepts-lateral and vertical relationship of sequences Sequence stratigraphy

Course Objective

1 .

To provide an in-depth understanding of sedimentary processes, including particle transport and fluid flow mechanics.

2 .

To classify and interpret sedimentary structures and sedimentary rock types based on their depositional environments.

3 .

To analyze modern and ancient sedimentary environments and their role in sediment deposition.

4 .

To study diagenetic processes in siliciclastic and carbonate sediments and their implications for basin evolution. To introduce fundamental concepts of facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy, and basin analysis for reconstructing past depositional environments.

Course Outcome

1 .

Demonstrate an understanding of the mechanics of sediment transport and the factors controlling particle deposition. Identify and classify sedimentary structures and rocks based on field and laboratory observations. Evaluate various depositional environments and their significance in the formation of sedimentary sequences. Apply knowledge of diagenetic processes to assess the transformation of sediments into sedimentary rocks. Utilize principles of sequence stratigraphy and facies analysis to interpret sedimentary basin evolution and paleoenvironments.
