Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I Introduction: Concepts of sustainable development exploring its ecological, social, institutional and economic aspects, challenges of sustainable development, sustainable development goals of United Nations, initiatives of government of India towards sustainable development goals, studying differences between its policy, science and planning documents.
Module II Environment sustainability: Climatology as a component of manmade ecosystem, macro-, meso and microclimate Ecosystem-atmosphere interactions Urban heat island Urban wind pattern, aerosols and air pollution, guiding environmental principles, technologies and values, sustainable lifestyles, evaluation of cases.
Module III Economic sustainability: Learning the economic aspects of sustainable development or sustainable livelihood strategies for rural and urban areas through case examples
Module IV Social sustainability: Studying the social aspects of sustainable development (social cohesion, quality of life, democracy and governance etc.) through case examples
Module V Sustainable development in Indian perspective: Analysing and comparing the urban structures and the urban life of areas from different epochs, based on observation, historical documents etc., relating findings to urban sustainable development addressing the challenges of sustainable urban development, the role of various stakeholders, national and international organizations, as well as the citizens in sustainable urban development, the process of planning and design, scenarios for sustainable future.

Course Objective

To understand the core challenges relating to the foundation of sustainable development and role of urban planner in sustainable development.

Course Outcome

Ability to understand fundamental concepts of planning and its various dimensions
Ability to design research and experiments, identify parameters and formulate methodology
Ability to apply and integrate qualitative and quantitative knowledge into planning process
Ability to understand complexity, conflicts, and multi-disciplinary aspects of planning
Ability to understand the contextual reference and impact of any decision on society and community
Ability to identify and resolve the lacunae in existing planning process and management
Ability to understand and incorporate the need of various stakeholders
Ability to formulate appropriate strategies and policies applying cutting edge concepts and technologies related to sustainable planning
Ability to appreciate existing theories, solutions and to develop professional ethics
