Module 1 :

Module I
Introduction: Settlement systems and their classification based on degree of primacy, city-size, function, morphology, spatial pattern, and others evolution of settlement systems and influencing factors urbanization, industrialisation and development urban agglomeration urban-rural linkages urban and regional transformation regional variation in urbanization and settlement patterns

Module II
Population dynamics: Understanding population growth and distribution types and patterns of migration and underlying factors migration models and theories

Module III
Settlement dynamics: Growth models in settlement systems: principles of agglomeration urban sprawl and peri-urban development theories of settlement hierarchy - Chirstaller’s Central Place Theory, Losch’s settlement system, and others network of settlements non-spatial proximities and city system in a globalized economy global settlement patterns growth dynamics of urban and regional settlement systems in India through case studies.

Module IV
Analysing settlement patterns: Information feedback in urban systems discontinuous changes in settlement systems Limits to organizations and self-organizing systems Urban Dynamic Model Artificial Intelligence in understanding urban settlement systems.

Course Objective

To understand the concept of settlement systems at urban and regional scales, their spatial patterns, growth dynamics, and influencing factors.
