Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I Introduction: Evolution, concept and theories overview of various natural resources history of environmental planning, relations and debates related with environmental planning environmental zones, problems, potential, regulating mechanism for development, environmental protection.
Module II Global approach to Environmental Planning: International policies and related interventions for protection of environment, role of various stakeholders, public participatory approach for environmental management
Module III Resource Planning and Management in India: Indian policies and their implication in urban and regional context overview of legal and legislative provisions for protection role of various authorities and institutions practices at regional, city and local level environmental protection techniques.
Module IV Environmental concerns in planning: Introduction to quantitative ecology, Identification of ecological parameters for planning at different levels, site planning, settlement planning, regional planning data needs, formats for data collection, types of analysis required to evolve ecological parameters ecological awareness in India, traditional indigenous methods, contemporary trends endowments and resources, definition and classification according to different criteria, endues, renewable, non-renewable etc. space bound and flow resources, preparation and analysis of resource inventories and resource matrices.
Module V Environmental Impact Assessment – Introduction to EIA overview of methods and their appraisal.
Module VI Case-studies: Case-study based on environmental planning and management by the local administrative body of an Indian city.

Course Objective

To integrate various environmental and ecological issues in local and global context with the planning principles and strategies.

Course Outcome

Ability to understand fundamental concepts of planning and its various dimensions
Ability to design research and experiments, identify parameters and formulate methodology
Ability to apply and integrate qualitative and quantitative knowledge into planning process
Ability to understand complexity, conflicts, and multi-disciplinary aspects of planning
Ability to understand the contextual reference and impact of any decision on society and community
Ability to identify and resolve the lacunae in existing planning process and management
Ability to understand and incorporate the need of various stakeholders
Ability to formulate appropriate strategies and policies applying cutting edge concepts and technologies related to sustainable planning
Ability to appreciate existing theories, solutions and to develop professional ethics
