Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE6603 : Construction Planning, Scheduling and Control { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Introduction to Construction Project Management (7 hours)
Management: Functions of Management, Principles of Management, Introduction to Construction Industry and Projects; Construction Project Categories, Lifecycle, and Stakeholders, Structure of Project Organization, Traits of a Construction Manager, Project Management Triangle, National and International Project Management and Construction Project Management Standards.

Module 2 :

Project Appraisal and Construction Planning (7 hours)
Types of Appraisals, Criteria for Project Selection, Project Feasibility Report and Detailed Project Report, Role of Project Management Consultants in Various Phases of Construction Project. Basic Concepts in the Development of Construction Plans, Choice of Technology and Construction Method, Defining Work Tasks, Defining Precedence Relationships among Activities, Estimating Activity Durations, Estimating Resource Requirements for Work Activities.

Module 3 :

Scheduling Procedures and Techniques (10 hours)
Project Scheduling, Bar Charts/Gantt Charts, Activity Sequencing, Network Diagrams, Critical Path Method, Scheduling Calculations, Float, Presenting Project Schedules, Scheduling for Activity-on-Node and with Leads and Lags, Scheduling with Resource Constraints and Precedence, Use of Advanced Scheduling Techniques - Programme Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT).

Module 4 :

Project Monitoring and Control (6 hours)
Parameters of project performance, time, cost and quality and their interrelationships, Project Progress Tracking , Records and Reports; Schedule Updating; Crashing and Time/Cost Trade-offs, Improving the Scheduling Process. Project Performance Evaluation – S-curve; Earned Value Management (EVM), performance reporting, audit, Project Closure, Introduction to computer applications in project management.

Module 5 :

Construction Material Management (6 hours)
Introduction to Material Management - Definition, Objectives, and Scope. Procurement Process, Functions of Material Management - Materials Planning, Procurement, Custody, Material Accounting, Transportation, Inventory Monitoring and Control, Material Codification, Computerization, Vendor Development. Inventory Management - Inventory-related Cost, Functions of Inventory, Inventory Policies, Selective Inventory Control, Inventory Models.

The students will be able to learn about scheduling the networking of activities using the critical path method and Programme Evaluation and Review Technique.
