Syllabus

Module 1 :

Outline of Blast furnace Design.
Overview of charging of raw materials and study of different process parameters (High top pressure, Humidified & Oxygen enriched blast, Auxiliary fuel injection) in blast furnace.
Properties and characterization of raw materials used in blast furnace Iron making: Iron ore, Limestone, Coke and Agglomerates.
Reactions involved in blast furnace iron making with thermodynamic consideration: Reactions in stack, bosh and hearth, formation of primary slag, bosh slag, and hearth slag. Slag composition and its control, Metal-slag reactions, Control of hot metal composition.
Principles of steel making reactions, Viz. Decarburisation, dephosphorisation, desulphurisation, silicon and managanese reaction.
LD Process: Design of converter & lance, Quality of raw materials charged, Operation of the converter and control of bath and slag composition, Chemical reactions involved, Temperature and residual bath oxygen control, Some characteristics of L.D. blow Viz: emulsion formation, Slopping, Management of lance height for dephosphorization and decarburization.
Electric Arc Furnace: Advantages Charging, Melting, and refining practices for plain carbon and alloy steels, developments in electric arc furnace operations.
OBM/Q-BOP, Mixed/Combined blowing Process.
Casting of Steel: Ingot casting, Continuous casting, and Developments in technologies to improve productivity.

Course Objective

To study various Ironmaking routes and strategies to improve productivity.

2 .

To study physicochemical concepts involved in Ironmaking.

3 .

To study the various liquid steel processing technologies and physicochemical concepts.

4 .

To study the solidification of liquid steel.
