Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module1: Stress around mine openings, in-situ Stress- Determination of in-situ rock mass properties, in-situ testing methods and instrumentations.
Module 2: Design of underground workings: Structural Design Approaches including applicability of Wilson’s approach, Safety factors.
Module 3: Slope Stability: Shear Strength, Slope failure types, mechanisms, and theories.
Module 4: Rock Reinforcement and Support: Mechanisms of failure in rock structures-intact and anisotropy, Rock Load and stability, Supporting and reinforcement members, Design of support and reinforcement systems
Module 5: Surface Subsidence: Subsidence mechanisms and control measures,
Module 6: Basics of numerical methods in geomechanics and applications, Case studies involving rock mechanics fundamentals.

Course Objective

1 .

To decide the rock parameters affecting its behaviour and their behaviour

2 .

To predict the excavation geometry

3 .

To determine the stress and its solutions

4 .

To determine optimum dimension of excavation and predict safety factor

Course Outcome

1 .

1: To explain the advanced trends in determination of in situ rock mass properties
2: To study slope stability factors and predict the safety factors through different approaches
3. To predict rock reinforcement techniques for underground and opencast applications
4: To design underground excavation and its different elements
5: To analyse rock excavation dimensions numerically and predict different situations and the resultant stress-strain
