Syllabus

Module 1 :

Introduction: Various types of Mine hazards encountered during mining including Blasting, use of mining machinery, Roof fall, and Side fall.

Module 2 :

Coal Mine fire - Classification of mine fire, the genesis of mine fire, Spontaneous heating of coal, incubation period, detection of fire, prevention, and control of mine fire in underground coal mines

Module 3 :

Mine Explosion – Methane explosion, Coal dust explosion, genesis, detection, prevention, and control in underground coal mines

Module 4 :

Water danger in mines, Surface and underground precautions to prevent flooding of the mines, Inundation of mines, and dewatering

Module 5 :

Rock Bursts, Coal Mine Bumps, detection, prevention, and control technology used in mines

Module 6 :

Rescue and Recovery operations in mines, Rescue station, Rescue equipment, classification, recovery operations after mine fire, explosion, and inundation.

Course Objective

1 .

To understand hazards associated with underground coal mining

2 .

To understand the mechanism of various types of hazards associated with underground coal mining

3 .

To understand the mitigation measures to be taken to face the various types of hazards in mines

4 .

To understand the monitoring and control of various types of hazards associated with underground coal mining

Course Outcome

1 .

CO 1. The students will learn the process of identifying and assessing different hazards present in underground mines like fire, explosion, roof fall, side fall, rock bursts, coal bumps, inundation etc.

2 .

CO 2. Acquire comprehensive knowledge on the causes of underground mine disaster and their mitigation procedure.

3 .

CO 3. The students will gain understanding on mine rescue and recovery procedures.

4 .

CO 4. Device and implement ‘Standard Operating Procedures’ and ‘Code of Practices’

5 .

CO 5. Development of Emergency Management Plan and its implementation procedure.
