Alloy and Solid solution, Phase rule and phase diagram, Allotropy of Iron and Fe-C Phase diagram, Atomic models of Diffusion

Module 2 :

Basics of phase transformation, Nucleation and growth kinetics, Formation and transformation of austenite, TTT and CCT Diagrams, Functions of alloying elements in steel, Importance of Austenite Grain size.

Module 3 :

Pearlitic transformation: Factors influencing pearlitic transformation, Mechanism of transformation, Nucleation and growth, Related heat treatment

Module 4 :

Bainitic transformation: Types of Bainites, Mechanism of transformation, Related heat treatment

Module 5 :

Martensitic transformation: Characteristics of transformation, Mechanism, Stabilization, Related heat treatment

Module 6 :

Other heat treatment processes and related mechanism: Tempering, Ageing

Module 7 :

Strengthening mechanisms, Recovery, Recrystallization and Grain growth

Course Objective

1 .

To follow the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations.

2 .

To understand the principle of austenitizations and the implication of different parameters on kinetics.

3 .

Understand various mechanisms of pearlitic, Baintitic, and martensitic Transformations in the Fe-C system.

4 .

To understand age-hardening and recrystallization processes.
