Syllabus
| Module 1 : |
Concept of determinate and indeterminate structures, determination of degree of static and kinematic indeterminacy in beams, plane and space trusses, rigid frames and continuous structures. [4 hrs]

| Module 2 : |
Analysis of statically indeterminate beams by force methods- Propped cantilever and fixed beams using moment area method. Deflection of beams by using geometric methods- conjugate beam approach. Analysis of continuous beams by Clapeyron’s Theorem of Three moments including settlement of supports. [6 hrs]

| Module 3 : |
Deflection of structures by energy approach-Strain energy and complementary strain energy, strain energy due to axial load, bending and shear. Application of law of conservation of energy, principles of virtual work, Castigliano’s first theorem. Deflection of determinate beams, truss and rigid frames by Energy methods. [4 hrs]

Slope-Deflection Method of Analysis: Slope-deflection equations, equilibrium equation of slope-deflection method, application to beams with and without joint translation and rotation, yielding of support, application to non-sway rigid jointed rectangular portal frames, shear force and bending moment diagram. Sway analysis of rigid jointed rectangular (single storey) portal frames using slope-deflection method. [6 hrs]

| Module 5 : |
Moment Distribution Method of Analysis: Stiffness factor, carry over factor, distribution factor, application to beams with and without joint translation, yielding of support, application to non-sway rigid jointed rectangular portal frames, shear force and bending moment diagram. Sway analysis of rigid jointed rectangular single bay single storey portal frames using moment distribution method. [6 hrs]

Influence lines for statically determinate structures- Basics of Rolling loads and influence lines for simply supported beams for different load cases including single point load, uniformly distributed load (UDL) and series of concentrated loads, Influence line for forces in members of Pratt and Warren trusses with parallel top and bottom chords. [6 hrs]

Arches-Analysis of three-hinged, two-hinged and fixed parabolic and circular arches, influence line for horizontal thrust, bending moment, normal thrust and radial shear for arches. [8 hrs] |
