Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I: Mechanism of Remote sensing, Ideal Remote Sensing System, Elements of Remote Sensing System, Passive and Active Remote Sensing, Electromagnetic radiations, Electromagnetic Spectrum, Interaction with the atmosphere, Energy sources and radiation principle, scattering, absorption, atmospheric windows, Interaction with targets, albedo, spectral reflectance curves of earth features, Characteristics of images. [10 hrs]

Module II: Satellite characteristics-Orbits, Swath, Nadir, Pixel size, Sensor resolutions- Spatial, Spectral, Radiometric and Temporal. Indian Satellites and other purpose driven satellites, Data products. [8 hrs]

Module III: Image interpretation, Image processing techniques, Optical and infra-red Remote sensing, Thermal remote sensing, Microwave remote sensing, Hyperspectral remote sensing, Basics of Radar, Digital image processing system, Pre-processing of raw data, Image enhancement, Transformation, Supervised and un-supervised Classification, Accuracy assessment, Data Integration, analysis and interpretation. [10 hrs]

Module IV: Introduction to GIS, GIS components, Data sources and products, Spatial reference system and geo-referencing, Projection system, Data acquisition- raster and vector data, Registration and relating different data, Spatial analysis, Data integration, Data modeling, Data models, Data structures, Measurement of length, perimeter and area, management, Database models, Geospatial analysis, Spatial statistics, Database query, Reclassification, Buffering, Overlaying of Maps, Spatial interpolation, Surface analysis, Network analysis, Principal Component analysis, applications of GIS. [12 hrs]

Course Objective

To enable the students to improve their understanding regarding data acquisition through remote sensing.

To empower the students with skills in managing spatial data in digital format

3 .

To develop understanding regarding principles and technics for image analysis

4 .

To apply the knowledge gained for solving problems related to water resources

Course Outcome

1 .

On completion of the course, the student should be capable
