Syllabus

Module 1 :

MODULE I: 9 HOURS
1. Determination of concentration of hydrogen ion, electrical conductivity and turbidity in
water and waste water samples.
2. Measurement of alkalinity of given samples of water and determination of
concentrations of alkalinity constituents.
3. Measurement of hardness of given samples of water and determination of concentrations
of hardness constituents.

MODULE II: 9 HOURS
4. To measure concentration of iron in given samples of water/wastewater.
5. To measure Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels and reaeration constant water sample(s).
6. To quantify the amount of biodegradable organic matter present in wastewater sample by
determination of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and determination of BOD rate
constant.

MODULE III: 12 HOURS
7. To quantify the amount of biodegradable and non-biodegradable organic matter present
in wastewater sample by determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).
8. To determine the optimum coagulant dosage for clarifying the given sample of water by
performing the jar test experiment.
9. To determine Break-Point Chlorine Demand in water and waste water sample.
10. Measurement and analyses of primary air pollutants CO, SOx and NOx.

Course Objective

1 .

The aim of this course is to analyse the physical, chemical and biological
characteristics of water and wastewater. In addition to measurement of particulate and gaseous pollutant concentration in ambient air.

2 .

Measurement of particulate and gaseous pollutant concentration in ambient air.

3 .

Study of noise level in varying environment

Course Outcome

1 .

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:
CO1: Apply different analysis techniques for the measurement of physical and chemical
parameters of water and wastewater
CO2: Relate the theoretical knowledge of sampling and analysis into laboratory practice and
estimate the concentration of various parameters in water, wastewater, and ambient air
CO3: Practical knowledge of conducting and studying environmental parametres.
Sampling and analysis concepts
CO4:Identify and quantify the present pollution level scenario
CO5: Comparison with standards
