Syllabus

Module 1 Engineering properties of soil deposits (8 Hours)
Rock cycle, classification of rocks and rock-forming minerals. Weathering process and formation of soil. Engineering properties of the soft, week and compressible deposits, Natural on land, off-shore and Man-made deposits. Role of ground improvement in foundation engineering, methods of ground improvement, Selection of suitable ground improvement techniques.
Module 2 Mechanical modification: (6 Hours)
Principle of compaction, Laboratory compaction, Factors affecting compaction, Effect of compaction on various soil properties, Field compaction techniques, and field equipment.
Module 3 Chemical modification: (6 Hours)
Stabilization with lime, cement, geopolymer, salts and other chemicals.
Module 4 In-situ treatments methods: (10 Hours)
In-situ densification soils, Dynamic compaction, and consolidation, Vibrofloation, Sand pile compaction, Preloading with sand drains and fabric drains Granular columns, Micro piles, Soil nailing, Ground Anchors, Lime piles, Grouting technique, Thermal, Electrical and Chemical methods, Electro osmosis, Soil freezing.
Module 5 Reinforced Soil: (6 Hours)
The mechanism, Reinforcement materials, Reinforcement - Soil Interactions, Geosynthetics, Analysis and Design of Reinforced Retaining Structures, Embankments, and Slopes. Ground Improvement Techniques for Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Case studies on ground improvement techniques.

Understanding the engineering behavior of various natural and man-made soil deposits

Understanding the concept of various ground improvement techniques

Selection of site specific method of improvement and its design

Expousure to recent ground improvement techniques through various case studies

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1.Understand the process of formation of soil and identify their geotechnical properties
2. Identify the problems associated with the existing ground .
3. Analyze and design of different techniques
4.Recommend an appropriate ground improvement technique.
5. Design reinforced soil structures.
