Syllabus

Prerequisites: Undergraduate level courses on structural analysis/strength of materials/solid mechanics.

Course Details:

Topic 1: General overview of the structural reliability and its role in civil engineering design.

Topic 2: Fundamental theory of Statistics and Theory of probability, Probability Distributions (Continuous & Discrete), Random processes/fields, Random Variables, Random vectors

Topic 3: Reliability definitions, different levels of reliability and their sequential developments, Basic variables, Failure Surface Definition of Reliability in Std. Normal Space (Cornell’sReliability Index), First Order Reliability Method (FORM) Hasofer-Lind’s Definition of Reliability Rackwitz-Fiessler Algorithm Asymptotic Integral, Second Order Reliability Method (SORM) etc.

Topic 4: Monte-Carlo Methods Latin Hypercube Sampling, Variance Reduction, Technique, Importance Sampling and Adaptive Sampling Subset Simulation

Topic 5: The treatment of implicit limit states using Meta models like Response Surface Method (RSM), Adaptive Response Surface Method and the recently developed Stochastic Response Surface Method (SRSM) techniques are explained with examples.

Topic 6: The knowledge of reliability will be applied for Stochastic Models of Loads, Code Calibration, Partial Safety Factors, and LRFD Format System Reliability analysis

Topic 7: Introduced to structural reliability analysis under fatigue loading, Dynamic loading etc.

Topic 8: The application of reliability methods for structural design optimization
Topic 9: Reliability analysis of complex real life structures using MATLAB and commercially available software for finite element analysis software in batch mode.

Topic 10 Brief introduction to Stochastic FEM and their role in reliability analysis is presented.

Instruction for the assignments:
1. All the assignments homework must be submitted with clear and neat calculations and neat sketches. Sloppy, disorganized homework will not be graded.
2. Assignment must be submitted on or before the time mentioned in the assignment. For late submission student need to take permission prior to the due date of the submission (with proper documents)

Identify sources of uncertainty in structural problems

Develop probabilistic models or input/system parameter uncertainty

Compute the reliability index and Bounds on the properties (e.g. Limit states) for structural systems
