Syllabus

Module-I (8 hrs) / Design as a discipline: General concepts of design as a discipline, its need and relevance, impacts, disciplinary challenges, and evolution from craft-making Need for new design methods generations of design methodologists Design as a wicked problem Assignment: (1) Identify the purpose in a designed product or service (2) Identify the short-term and long-term impacts of a designed product or service. Classify them into intended and unintended.

Module-II (14 hrs) / Design as a process: Introduction to design thinking Mapping of design process Types of design methods (convergent, divergent, or other) and design strategies (linear, cyclical, branching, or other) Application of a selected set of design methods (e.g., concept selection, morphological chart, diagramming, etc.) Assignment: (1) Map the design process adopted in a previously dealt design assignment (2) Use a concept selection method to evaluate multiple concepts generated in a previously dealt design assignment.

Module-III (14 hrs) / Human centred design: Need for integration of technology and psychology in design General concepts of human cognition, perception, and memory Aids of discoverability (e.g., affordance, signifier, constraints, feedback, mapping) Designing for human errors Assignment: (1) Assess the design of a product / service for the presence or absence of applicable aids of discoverability (2) Identify the potential for minimizing human errors while interacting with a designed product or service.

To understand design as a discipline and identify design as a process, and its methodology.

To learn the basic principles of human centred design.

1. Ability to identify design as a discipline and recognize its challenges.
2. Ability to formulate design as a process and apply appropriate design methods.
3. Ability to integrate the aids of discoverability in design to make it more human centric.
