Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : PA3611 : Acoustics and Illumination { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I- Basic theory of sound:
Frequency, wavelength, velocity, sound spectrum, the sensitivity of hearing inverse-square law, decibel, noise exposure limits sound level meters, A-Weighted sound level decibel scales for sound intensity, pressure and power.
Assignment: Numerical exercises on intensity to dB conversion and inverse-square law
Module II- Sound absorption:
Sound absorbing treatment sound absorption coefficient, reverberation room application of sound-absorbing materials reverberation time, optimum reverberation time.
Assignment(s): Numerical exercises on sound absorption and reverberation time calculations for a built space.
Module III- Sound reflections:
Sight line basics sight line layout, reflection diffusion, diffraction, ray diagram graphics echoes, echo control principles, flutter echo.
Assignment: Exercises on ray-diagram analysis of a built space and identifying the causes of echo.
Module IV- Sound isolation:
Mass law, effect of stiffness sound leaks, noise reduction between rooms, STC contour masking for sound isolation, noise criteria curves, room criteria curves impact isolation outdoor barrier for noise control, thin-wall barrier, balconies and overhangs, earth berms attenuation from vegetation temperature and wind effect, land use planning for noise control, orientation of buildings.
Assignment: Exercise on proposing various strategies for isolating outside sound for a building.
Module V- Basic concept in lighting:
Qualities of light sources lamps and luminaires quality of light, quantity of light for an enclosed space lighting design approach and lighting design in spaces like residential, workplace, classroom, healthcare, retail, hospitality, common spaces outdoor lighting design.
Assignment: Exercise on describing the properties of lamps and luminaire design.
Module VI- Daylighting:
Basic principles of daylighting daylighting systems case-study on daylighting and illumination, including use of software to assess daylighting conditions

Course Objective

1 .

To acquire and apply knowledge of basic building sciences related to acoustics while proposing acoustical solutions

2 .

To develop an understanding of various types of luminaires and lamps and apply the same in proposing illumination design.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. Ability to develop an understanding of the sound absorption, reflection, and transmission of sound in enclosed space.
2. Ability to draw the acoustical ray-diagram and analyse an architectural space for any acoustical defects and propose solutions.
3. Ability to analyse the quantitative and qualitative demand of lighting in a space, and to propose an illumination design.
4. Ability to understand the principles of daylighting and strategies to integrate daylighting inside the building.
