Syllabus

Module 1 :

Introduction
Experiment 1 – Familiarize different metallography Lab Instruments
Experiment 2 – Study the microstructure of different types of plain carbon steel. Low C (0.2% C), Medium C (0.6% C) and High C (1.1%C) steel.
Experiment 3 – Study the microstructure of different types of alloy steel. Mild Steel, Rail Steel and File Steel.
Experiment 4 – Study the microstructure of different types of cast irons (CI). White CI, Grey CI, Malleable CI and Spheroidal Graphite CI / Nodular CI.
Experiment 5 – Study the microstructure of pure copper, 70-30 Brass, 60-40 Brass
Experiment 6 – Metallography of Cu-alloy at various annealing temp (300, 350 and 500 C)
Experiment 7 – Metallography of Al and Al-Si alloys
Experiment 8– Fracture specimen (ductile, brittle)
Experiment 9 – Metallography of NiTi smart alloys

Course Objective

1. To know the sample preparation for surface morphology and sample preparation related instruments
2. To know the microstructure of various specimen
3. To know the mechanical properties with respect to the microstructure
4. To know the behaviour of fractured sample
