| Module 1 : |
Introduction and design approach: Properties of structural steel, Indian standard specifications and sections, analysis procedures and design philosophy, limit states of strength, limit states of serviceability, design criteria for limit state method. [3 hours] |
| Module 2 : |
Design of connections: Bolted, and welded connections, types of bolts, types of bolted joints, failure of bolted joints, design of bearing-type connections, design of slip-critical connections, types of welded connections, failure of welds, design of fillet welds, design of butt welds, prying action, design of eccentric bolted connections, design of eccentric welded connections. [7 hours] |
| Module 3 : |
Design of tension members: Types of tension members, types of failures, design strength of tension members, slenderness ratio, design of bolted tension members, lug angles, design of welded tension members. [5 hours] |
| Module 4 : |
Design of compression members: Types of compression members, effective length, slenderness ratio, design of axially loaded compression members, built-up columns, lacing, and batten. [6 hours] |
| Module 5 : |
Design of column bases: Types of column bases, design of slab base, design of bolted gusseted base, design of welded gusseted base, design of moment-resisting base plates, design of anchor bolts. [5 hours] |

Design of beams: Types of steel beam sections, section classification, elastic critical moment, web buckling and web crippling, deflection, design guidelines of steel beams, design of rolled steel beams supported against lateral torsional buckling, design of rolled steel beams not supported against lateral torsional buckling, design of built-up beams, design of purlins. [6 hours] |

Design of plate girder: Elements of plate girder, proportioning of web and flanges, flexural strength, shear strength of web, design of plate girders without stiffeners, design of plate girders with stiffeners. [4 hours] |
