Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : ER5250 : Instrumental Methods in Geosciences { 3-0-0 / 3}

Subject Nature : Theory

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: The destructive and non-destructive analytical techniques in Geology. [4 Hours]
Module 2: The working principle of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-ray Diffraction (XRD). [6 Hours]
Module 3: Optical spectrometry - Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Atomic emission spectroscopy (AES). [6 Hours]
Module 4: Mass spectrometry - Inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS), Raman spectrometry, Chromatography. [6 Hours]
Module 5: Accuracy and Precision of Data, International reference materials/standards, Sample preparation and analysis using the above instruments. [10 Hours]

Course Objective

1 .

Basic understanding about the different analytical techniques in Geosciences.

2 .

Working principles of various instruments and their uses.

3 .

Understanding about the sample preparation methods, standards used and instrumental calibration.

Course Outcome

1 .

Broad idea about the instruments used in Geosciences and its applications. Its usefulness in research.
