Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: To study the physical properties of ore minerals in hand specimen: chalcopyrite, pyrite, stibnite, galena, bauxite, hematite, magnetite, orpiment, graphite, psilomelane, magnesite, azurite, chromite, gypsum, realgar, rhodochrosite, sphalerite, malachite.
Module 2: To study the optical properties of metallic/non-metallic minerals under ore microscope: Pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, sphalerite, malachite, hematite, magnetite, ilmenite, chromite.
Module 3: Distribution of major metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits of India, mode of occurrences and its industrial uses: (i) Iron ore deposits (ii) Chromite deposits (iii) Bauxite deposits (iv) Manganese deposits (v) Sulfur deposits (vi) Gold deposits (vii) Copper deposits (viii) Lead-Zinc deposits (ix) Mica deposits (x) Tin deposits (xi) Tungsten deposits (xii) Fluorite deposits.
Module 4: Preparation of maps showing distribution of classical world mineral deposits: (i) Iron ore deposits (ii) Chromite deposits (iii) Bauxite deposits (iv) Sulfur deposits (v) Gold deposits (vi) Copper deposits (vii) Lead-Zinc deposits.

Course Objective

To learn Reflected light microscopy techniques.

To identify ore minerals and textures

To interpret the genesis of the ore deposit and mineral paragenesis.

To analyze the pattern of ore distribution in India and around the world

Course Outcome

CO1: Identification of economically important ore minerals in field.

CO3: Classify the ore types and identify them under ore microscope.

CO4: Characterize the textures of ore minerals and its process of formation.

CO5: Locate the geographical distribution of economically viable ore deposits in India and around the world.
