Syllabus

Module-I: Indian Road Transportation Systems (2 hours)
Roadways: Introduction, ancient roads, Road Development plans, and programmes, Modes of Transportation.
Module-II: Geometric Design of Highway (10 hours)
Principles of alignment Geometric design, Cross-sectional elements, Sight distances, Horizontal and vertical alignments.
Module III: Pavement materials (6 hours)
Introduction to pavement system, layers of pavement, Subgrade soil, Aggregates, Bituminous binders, Bituminous paving mixes, mix design of pavement.
Module-IV: Structural Design of Pavements (8 hours)
Flexible pavement design using the IRC method, rigid pavement design using the IRC method, stresses in rigid pavement, joints in rigid pavement, and maintenance of highways.
Module-V: Traffic Engineering (10 hours)
Speed, Volume, Density, Relation among fundamental parameters, Traffic data collection, Capacity and level of service, Traffic control devices, Road markings, Parking, Roundabout, and signalized intersection design.

Conversant with road alignment and various parameters required for road geometric design

Familiar with different types of material used for road construction and their quality assurance

Analysis and design of layer structures of both flexible and rigid pavement

Acquire knowledge on traffic studies of data collection procedures, analysis, control measures, capacity and service quality assessment

CO1: Understand the basic concept of road transport and road cross-sectional elements.
CO2: Carry out detailed studies on horizontal and vertical alignment geometric design of roadways
CO3: Apply the concept of testing on subgrade soil, road aggregates, and bitumen used for mix design and structural design of flexible pavement in the field
CO4: Apply the concept of testing on rigid pavement materials and structural design.
CO5: Understand basics of traffic engineering, estimate capacity and level of service of roadways and intersections
