Subject {L-T-P / C} : MM4301 : Secondary Steel Making { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: Overview of Iron making and Steelmaking processes and recent developments (5 Hours)
Module 2: Concept of Primary steel refining, Overview of Oxygen and EAF steel refining aspects (5 Hours)
Module 3: Scope of Secondary Steelmaking, Principles of degassing, different degassing processes (Ladle, Stream, Recirculation Degassing)(6 Hours)
Module 4: Ladle Metallurgy: Desulphurization, Alloying, Thermodynamics of various reactions involved, Clean steelmaking : Inclusion engineering and control, Deoxidation requirement and principle (10 hours)
Module 5: Composition control for ultra-low impurity steel grades (5 Hours)
Module 6: Concept of Tundish Metallurgy and its effectiveness for clean steel production (6 Hours)

Course Objective

1 .

To provide the student with a sufficient background for understanding the fundamentals of the Integrated Steel Industry flow chart with extensive explanation.

2 .

To provide conceptual knowledge to the students of different secondary steelmaking processes.

3 .

The goal is to transfer knowledge to the students regarding mass transfer, reaction kinetics, and the thermodynamics of deoxidation, desulphurization, and dephosphorization processes.

4 .

To provide a sufficient background of solution methods to be able to solve a variety of problems related to steel industries.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. The students will be able to understand the overall process of an integrated steel plant.
2. The students will be able to understand the different secondary steelmaking steps.
3. The students will acquire knowledge of thermodynamic and reaction kinetic mechanisms of different secondary steelmaking processes.
4. Inclusion types, control, and their mechanisms with different defects.
5. The students will be able to understand the control of sulphur, phosphorus, and gas in liquid steel.
6. The students will understand the concept of clean steelmaking, the origin of non-metallic inclusion, and its modification techniques.
