Syllabus

Module 1 :

1. Surface: Philosophy of surface, broken bond concept, defects, general applications and requirements
2. Surface degradation: Mechanical friction, basic principles of electrochemistry, wear like abrasive, erosive, sliding wear, etc., interaction between wear and corrosion
3. Surface engineering: Discrete coatings- electrodeposition, thermal spray, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, etc. Integral coatings- shot peening, induction hardening, laser and electron beam surface hardening, hot metal dipping, ion implantation, carburizing, nitriding, plasma nitriding, etc.
4. Latest trends in coatings: multi-layer structures, nanolayer coatings, nanocomposite coatings, functionally gradient coatings. Industrial applications
5. Surface characterization
6. Case studies

Course Objective

Students will be able to propose surface engineering techniques for target applications

CO2: Analyze and interpret mechanisms of surface degradation, such as wear and corrosion

CO3: Compare and evaluate discrete coating techniques, such as electroplating and thermal spraying, for enhancing surface properties

CO4: Examine and evaluate integral coating techniques, such as thermally, mechanically, and thermochemically modified coatings like anodizing, shot peening, and nitriding, to enhance surface properties and performance

CO5: Assess the latest trends in surface coatings

CO6: Apply surface characterization techniques to evaluate coating performance
