Module 1 :

Mechanical Metallurgy Lab (MM4222) Syllabus – 10 Hrs


Name of experiments:

Experiment 1 – Hardness measurement of metallic materials using Vickers/Brinell/Rockwell hardness tester.

Experiment 2 – Micro hardness testing of two and / or multiphase alloy systems.

Experiment 3 – Tensile tests of low carbon steel (annealed).

Experiment 4 – Tensile tests of high carbon steel (annealed).

Experiment 5 – Tensile tests of a non-ferrous alloy.

Experiment 6 – To draw true stress – true strain diagram/s using above data (Experiment 5) and determination of strain hardening exponent

Experiment 7 – To draw true stress – true strain diagram/s using above data (Experiment 6) and determination of strain hardening exponent.

Experiment 8 – To draw true stress – true strain diagram/s using above data (Experiment 7) and determination of strain hardening exponent

Experiment 9 – Develop S – N curve of a metallic specimen.

Experiment 10 – KIC tests of a brittle material.

Course Objective

1 .

To craft the understanding among the undergraduate students about different types of indentation hardness testing.

2 .

To understand the idea about tensile testing and analyzing the data of tensile testing for steel and non-ferrous materials.

3 .

To understand the fatigue behavior of materials and know about plotting the fatigue data.

4 .

To learn about the fracture toughness of materials and its determination through micro Vickers hardness testing.

Course Outcome

1 .

Students will develop the understanding regarding various mechanical testing such as hardness, tensile, fatigue fracture toughness etc. of metallic materials. The outcomes are as follows:

The undergraduate students will understand about different types of indentation hardness testing such as Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell hardness tastings.

Students will know about the micro hardness testing and will be able to determine the hardness of individual phases and thin coatings.

Students will understand the idea about tensile testing and analysing the data of tensile testing for steel and non-ferrous materials.

Students will get idea about the work hardening behaviour during tensile testing and the method to determine the work hardening parameters.

Students will get knowledge about the fatigue behaviour of materials and know about plotting the fatigue data.

Students will learn about the fracture toughness of materials and its determination through micro Vickers hardness testing.
