Module 1 :

Physical metallurgy Lab (MM4123) Syllabus – 10 Hrs


Name of experiments:

Experiment 1 – Preparation and practice of metallographic specimen.

Experiment 2 – Study of microstructure of pure metals like Cu, Pure Fe and Sn.

Experiment 3 – Study of microstructure of brass having different composition.

Experiment 4 – Study of microstructure of eutectoid and eutectic steel.

Experiment 5 – Study of microstructure of steel with 0.2, 0.6 and 1.1 %C.

Experiment 6 – Study of microstructure of cast (Gray, White and Malleable) Iron.

Experiment 7 – Annealing, normalizing and hardening of different types of steel.

Experiment 8 – Study of microstructures and hardness of heat treated steels obtained from
earlier experiment.

Experiment 9 – Annealing of cold worked metal and study the changes in microstructures.

Experiment 10 – Study the age hardening behavior of 2XXX / 7XXX aluminum alloy.

Course Objective

1 .

To craft the understanding among the undergraduate students about the metallographic technique such as preparation of metallographic specimens and observation under optical microscope.

2 .

To understand the general idea about the microstructure of pure metals like Cu, Fe, Sn and brass with different Zn percentage.

3 .

To study and analyze the microstructure of steels and cast irons having different percent of carbon.

4 .

To learn the basic of heat treatment processes such as annealing, normalizing, hardening etc. and study the associated microstructures. To acquire knowledge about the age hardening behavior of aluminum alloys of 2xxx and 7xxx series.

Course Outcome

1 .

Students will achieve the idea about microstructures in different materials in various processing conditions. The outcomes are as follows:

CO1
The undergraduate students will get understanding about the metallographic technique such as preparation of metallographic specimens and observation under optical microscope.

CO2
Students will get idea about the microstructure of pure metals like Cu, Fe, Sn and brass with different Zn percentage.

CO3
Students will able to analyse the microstructure of steels having different percent of carbon.

CO4
Students will able to examine the microstructure different cast irons such as grey, white and nodular cast iron.

CO5
Students will learn the basic of heat treatment processes such as annealing, normalizing, hardening etc. and study the associated microstructures.

CO6
Students will acquire the knowledge about the age hardening behaviour of aluminium alloys of 2xxx and 7xxx series.
