Crystal structure, Bravais lattice, crystallographic planes and direction, atomic packing factor, Phase, Gibbs Phase rule, equilibrium phase diagram, solid solution, substitutional and interstitial solid solution, phase transformation, homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, growth, Fe-C phase diagram, pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic transformation, TTT and CCT diagram. Bulk heat treatment- annealing, normalizing, hardening and tempering. surface heat treatment and thermochemical heat treatment processes. |
Course Objective

To learn the fundamental principles of physical metallurgy |

The concepts of alloy design and microstructural engineering will also be discussed in this course. |

The major objective of this course is to provide a physical basis that links the structure of materials with their properties. |

Topics like heat treatment, phase transformation, phase diagrams, precipitation hardening, aging, and phase diagrams will be taught in this course. |
