Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module – I (10 Hours)
Classification of materials, Bonding, Crystal structure, Imperfections in solids, Relationship between structure, properties and processing of materials, Basic principles of materials selection.

Module – II (5 Hours)
Polymers: Applications, Structure of Polymers, Classification of polymers, Mechanism of deformation and strengthening of polymers, Crystallization and Glass transition phenomena in polymers, Conduction in organic materials, Doping effects and copolymerization, Superconducting inorganic polymers, Polymers in metallurgical applications, Bio-degradable polymers.

Module – III (10 Hours)
Ceramics: Applications, structure and properties of ceramics, Mechanical behavior of ceramics, Principles of ceramic processing, Sintering, Types of ceramics, Structural ceramics, Bio-ceramics and nano-ceramics.

Module – IV (10 Hours)
Composites: Classification of composite materials, Properties of reinforcements and characteristics of reinforcement-matrix interface, Factors determining the properties of composites, Dispersion strengthened, particle reinforced and fiber-reinforced composites, Nonconventional composites.
