Syllabus

Module 1 :

Experiment 1:
Determination of packing density of one component system of various particle sizes. 3 Hours
Experiment 2:
Determination of packing density of two component system using various particle sizes having different weight ratios. 3 Hours
Experiment 3:
Determination of packing density of three component system using various particle sizes having different weight ratios. 6 Hours
Experiment 4:
Recipe calculation and recipe making for refractory mix using most packed composition. Making of green binder (PVA solution of 4 wt% concentration) 3 Hours
Experiment 5:
Preparation of refractory brick / shape by dry mixing, mixing with binder, uni-axial pressing, drying and firing. 3 Hours
Experiment 6:
Characterization of the fired refractory brick / shape by determination of bulk density, apparent porosity and crushing strength. 3 Hours
Experiment 7:
Determination of shrinkage and PLCR of refractory brick. 3 Hours
Experiment 8:
Processing and casting of castable composition using planetary mixer and vibrator. Curing, drying and firing of the same. 3 Hours
Experiment 9:
Effect of casting parameter on the properties of castable. 3 Hours
Experiment 10:
Study of densification and strength development in the castable with temperature. 3 Hours

Course Objective

1 .

1. To provide hands-on knowledge of shaped and unshaped refractory manufacturing and characterization techniques
2. To impart and develop basic knowledge and understanding on processing and characterization steps for refractory making.

Course Outcome

1 .

CO1: Apply the theoretical knowledge gained in course to develop and manufacture carry shaped and unshaped refractories in laboratory scale and their characterization
CO2: To be well versed with refractory manufacturing equipment and techniques practised in industries.
CO3: Gain hands-on experience to evaluate the properties of refractories, in laboratory, as per the standard practice used in industrial scale.
CO4: Ability to design and manufacturing refractories with different compositions.
CO5: Understand and implement various steps involved in refractory manufacturing methods.
CO6: Ability in report writing, presentation in a timely manner.
