Hard tissue- Structure, Mechanical Properties, Osteogenic properties, Healing, Repairing methods, Implant materials -Autograft, allograft, xenograft, metals, polymers, ceramics, Biological behaviors of implant materials.

Module-II
Bioceramics and its application
Clasification Biomaterials and their biological interactions, Mechanical and Biological properties of different types of Biomaterials, Implant –tissue interaction, Bioactive and surface active ceramics, Properties of Bioinert Ceramics, Stress shielding, Osteolysis, Parts of Hip implants. Pyrolytic carbon, its properties and applications.

Module III
Calcium Phosphate Bioceramics
Calcium Orthophosphates, Classification, Preparation, Structure, Properties and Biological performance of Hydroxyapatite, Tricalcium Phosphate, Biphasic Calcium phosphate, Hydroxyapatite from natural resources, Calcium phosphate nano particles, Applications of Calcium phosphate ceramics.

Module IV
Bioglass, Bioactive glasses and Bioglass ceramics
Structure, General Properties, Synthesis of Bioglass Physicochemical and Biological properties of Bioactive glasses, Bio glassceramics and their properties, Application of Bioglass and bioactive glass in hard and soft tissue engineering and medical implants, Glass microsphere for radiotherapy

Inorganic Phosphate Cements for hard tissue repair
Calcium Phosphate cement, Preparation, properties, setting and hardening, secondary additives, Reinforcement of calcium phosphate cement, State of the art of calcium phosphate cement, Challenges, Its application as medical implants, Magnesium Phosphate cements and ceramics, their composition and properties.

Module VI
Material Shaping
Bioceramic coatings for implants- Method, bioactive ceramic coatings, bioinert ceramic coatings, Biological responses on ceramic coated surfaces, Scaffold designing- Requirements, Processing techniques.

To understand properties of Hard and soft tissues.

To be able to analyze biomaterial-tissue interactions.

To understand characteristics of different types of biomaterials.

4. To understand the challenges in tissue engineering using implants

CO1: To explain the properties of Hard and soft tissues.
CO2: To describe various stages of biomaterials-tissue interactions
CO3: To apply the knowledge of properties of different biomaterials to illustrate their functioning as medical devices.
CO4: To evaluate and judge the challenges needed to overcome for improvement of performance of a medical implant.
CO5: To identify different strategies to evaluate osteogenic properties of a bone implant.
