Module 1 :

Module 1: Fundamental of Glass Science (6 Hours)
Enthalpy temperature correlation ship for glassy materials. Glass former, modifier and Intermediate. TTT diagram
Module 2 : Properties of Glass (6 Hours)
Role of different Oxides, Viscosity of glass, Bridging and Non Bridging Oxygen, Properties of glass, Annealing and tempering. Measurement of stress/ strain in glass.
Module 3: Glass Melting Process (8 Hours)
Manufacturing process glass-batch formulation. Batch materials handling equipment. Glass melting reactions, refining of glass. Batch Calculation
Module 4: Industrial Glass Making (8 Hours)
Process Control for Glass Furnaces Operation, various stages and Statistical Inspection. Design for Energy Saving in Glass Furnaces and Recovery in Heat Regenerator. Thermal consideration in Furnace Design. Temperature Modelling for Proper Refractory Selection. Flux line corrosion: Mechanism and prevention.
Module 5: Furnace for Glass Melting in Industry (4 Hours)
Oxy Fuel Furnace. Instrumentation: Sensors, Automatic control, Controlling Devices. Fabrication process: Feeders, Colburn process, PPG process, Float Glass manufacturing: Stress Distribution profile. Testing methods Pot melting. Day Tank, Float glass, Container glass, Danner processes. Glass Fiber. Hollow wares and fibre glass.
Module 6 : Quality Control in Industrial Glass Making (4 Hours)
Defects in glass: Stones, Seeds, Cords and Blisters. Quality control: Density, statistical quality control, Bursting pressure, thermal-shock resistance, Homogeneity. Electrical Melting. Industrial Surface treatment. Inspection procedure. Dimensional and capacity tolerance.

Course Objective

The course will provide in-depth knowledge of fundamentals of glassy materials and structure-property correlation ship in glassy materials

The course will provide integrated knowledge and understanding of industrial glass making

3 .

The course will provide a good knowledge base on quality control in glass industries

4 .

The course will provide the foundation for modeling and designing for process control in the glass industry

Course Outcome

1 .

1. Upon completion of this course, a student will possess the knowledge of the basic rules of glass formation,
2. Upon completion of this course, a ceramic graduate will gain knowledge of the physics and chemistry of glass
3. Upon completion of the course, a student will be able to learn composition- structure-property co-relationship in the glass.
4. Upon completion of this course, a student will know state-of-the-art modern and updated Industrial glass production techniques,
5. Upon completion of this course, a student will be self-sufficient in solving problems in industrial glass-making through proper quality control.
