Syllabus

Syllabus:
Module 1:
Introduction and classification of Fuels. Natural fuels, by-product fuels, manufactured fuels. Origin and applications of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels. Solid fuels: Coalification, rank of coal, caking and coking of coal, carbonization. Coal analysis, proximate and ultimate analysis of coal, Basis for reporting analysis results, coal constituents and related numerical problem solving. 6 Hours

Module 2:
Caking properties: caking index, free swelling index. Storage of coal and spontaneous ignition. Coal preparation, blending of coal, washing of coal. Coal carbonization: LTC, HTC, carbonization with and without by-product recovery. 6 Hours

Module 3:
Origin, refining and distillation of crude petroleum, properties of liquid fuel – flash point, fire point, cloud point and pour point. Cracking. Generation of producer gas, water gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasifiers. 6 Hours
Module 4:
Different types of industrial furnaces batch and continuous furnaces and kilns, sager, kiln furniture. Furnace components, efficient energy utilization in furnace, mode of energy savings, waste heat recovery, recuperator, regenerator, and Sankey diagram. Heat balance, POC temperature, gross available heat. 8 hours

Module 5:
Measurement of furnace temperature, heat work pyrometric cones, rings and bars. Combustion calculations. Numerical problem. Overview about different furnaces used in steel plants. 10 Hours

1. To develop knowledge about the performance and utilization of different type of fuel

2. To provide knowledge about furnace operation, fuel efficiency, furnace type and waste heat utilization.

3. To make them familiar with the combustion calculation.

4. To make them aware about furnaces used in the steel plants.

At the completion of this course students should be able to:
1. Apply their knowledge of different types of fuels in furnace operations
2. Apply their knowledge of furnace operation and fuel economy in their professional workplace.
3. Acquire problem-solving skills
4. Acquire knowledge about the coke oven and other furnaces used in the steel plants.
5. Evaluate and judge the usefulness of a fuel for a particular furnace operation.
