Syllabus

In this course, students will explore the different important ceramic raw materials used in ceramic and allied industries. They will be studying about in general availability, properties, crystal structure, and important applications of different raw materials. The course will also illustrate the effect of heat on different raw materials with reference to phase transformation, thermal expansion, melting, decomposition behaviour, compound formation, stabilization
Module 1: Brief description of geology, minerals and ores. Mineral formation, Beneficiation. Specific raw materials like Silica and Silicates, Clays: Kaolin, Fireclay, Ball clay, Bentonite. Feldspars (soda, potash, lime) and Nepheline Syenite. Pyrophyllite, Talc, Mica, Wollastonite, Sillimanite, Kyanite, Andalusite, Zircon, Baddeleyite, Bauxite, Limestone, Dolomite, Magnesite, Chromite, Fluorite, Barite, Graphite, Gypsum,
Module 2: Brief idea on processing, application areas and limitations of synthetic raw materials: Bayer process alumina, Calcined Alumina, Tabular Alumina, Fused Alumina, Sea-water Magnesia, Zirconia, Titania, Magnesio-Aluminate Spinel, Mullite, Fumed Silica etc. Non-oxide synthetic raw materials: Silicon carbide, Aluminium nitride, Silicon nitride, Zirconium Diboride, Tungsten Carbide, Titanium Carbide, Graphite etc.

To provide in-depth knowledge on various naturally occurring ceramic raw materials.

To provide in-depth knowledge on various synthetically prepared ceramic raw materials.

CO1: Apply the theoretical knowledge imparted during course to carry out independent research and developmental work related to the uses of raw materials in ceramic industries.
CO2: To be well versed with the crystal chemistry of ceramic raw materials for better understanding of the property of ceramic products made out of those raw materials.
CO3: Solve numerous problems and case studies related to raw material batch composition, effect of heat on different raw materials etc.
CO4: Able to design conventional and advanced ceramics materials for future technological needs.
CO5: Prepare future materials scientist and engineers who can fit in academia and industry for relevant scientific breakthrough
