Syllabus

Module 1 :

Principles of Extraction of Metals – I (Mineral Processing): Ore and ore body, parameters defining economy of ore processing, Liberation, communication, crushing, grinding, sizing, classification, Principles of minerals beneficiation such as heavy media separation, jigging, tabling, magnetic and electrostatic separation, Flotation, Solid – Liquid separation.
Principles of Extraction of Metals – II (Pyrometallurgy): Role of Ellingham diagram and phase stability diagrams, drying, calcinations, roasting and its types, smelting and its types.Principles of Extraction of Metals – III (Hydro & Electometallurgy): Principles of Leaching, simple dissolution, oxidative and reductive leaching, types of leaching in sites leaching, heap leaching, vat leaching, agitation leaching, pressure leaching, bio leaching solution extraction, ion exchange, Electrode potential, Electrochemical cell, electrochemical series, Eh – ph diagram. Faradays’ Law, Cell voltage, current density, current efficiency, Electro-winning, Electro refining, direct electowining, fussed – salt electrolysis.

Learn the various processes of extractive metallurgy, viz pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy

Understanding of a metal extraction unit

Course Outcome

Understanding of need for beneficiation of minerals, the principles involved and the vatiety of processes and equipments.

Concepts of metal extraction principles and processes for both ferrous and non ferrous metal.

Understand the means for green extractive processes.
