Subject {L-T-P / C} : EC3510 : Fundamentals of Communication Systems { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: Introduction to communication systems, signals and spectrum.

Module 2: Amplitude modulation (AM), Double side band suppressed carrier modulation (DSB-SC), Single side band (SSB) modulation generation, detection, Frequency division multiplexing (FDM).

Module 3: Frequency modulation (FM) and Phase modulation (PM).

Module 4: Radio receivers, Tuned radio frequency receivers for AM, Super heterodyne receivers for AM and FM.

Module 5: Noise in analog communication, short noise, thermal noise, atmospheric noise and solar noise. Impact of thermal noise on the AM, DSB-SC and SSB modulations.

Module 6: Sampling, Pulse code modulation (PCM), Time division multiplexing (TDM), Differential pulse coding modulation (DPCM), Delta modulation (DM).

Module 7: Digital modulation, Amplitude shift keying (ASK), Frequency shift keying (FSK), Phase shift keying (PSK), Differential phase shift keying (DPSK).

Module 8: Introduction to Information theory, Entropy, Source coding techniques: Shanon Fano coding and Huffman coding.
