Syllabus

Module 1 :

Computer Building Blocks: Overview and History of Computer, CPU, Memory, Input-Output Subsystems, Control Unit.

Module 2 :

Instruction Set Architecture: Instruction Execution Cycle, Instruction Set Types, Instruction Format, Addressing Modes, Instruction Set.

Module 3 :

Computer Arithmetic: Unsigned and Signed Number Representation, Fixed and Floating Point Representations, Integer Addition and Subtraction, Floating Point Arithmetic, Design of Arithmetic And Logic Unit (ALU).

Module 4 :

Processor Architecture: Components Of CPU, Pipelining, Parallel Processing, Multiprocessor System and Multi-Coring.

Module 5 :

Memory Design and Organization: Memory Technologies, Memory Organization, Cache Memory, Hierarchical Memory Organization.

Module 6 :

I/O And Peripherals: Input-Output Subsystems, Interrupts, Bus System, DMA, Synchronous Vs. Asynchronous I/O, External Storage.

Course Objective

1 .

To have a conceptual understanding on the basics organizational and architectural issues of a digital computer.

2 .

To study the instruction set architecture and computer arithmetic for designing an ALU.

3 .

To acquire knowledge on the basic memory design technologies and memory organizational issues of a computer.

4 .

To learn about various Input-Output subsystems and peripherals, and the interfacing techniques.

Course Outcome

Conceptualize the basics of organizational and architectural issues of a digital computer.

2 .

Ability to understand the design principles of Instruction Set Architecture and ALU.

3 .

Evaluate cost performance and design trade-offs in designing and constructing a computer processor.

4 .

Analyse performance issues in processor and memory design of a digital computer.

5 .

Gain knowledge on modern computer systems to solve real life practical and state of the art problems to serve VLSI industries.
