Module 1 :

MODULE 1: ENERGY SCENARIO [6 Hours]
Indian energy scenario in various sectors–domestic, industrial, commercial, agriculture, transportation, and others Present conventional energy status, Present renewable energy status potential of different renewable energy sources-Global energy status, Per capita energy consumption, Future energy plans

MODULE 2: SOLAR ENERGY [6 hours]
Solar radiation, solar radiation and sunshine measurements, Solar Spectrum, Solar thermal collectors, Flat plate and concentrating collectors, Solar thermal applications, Solar thermal energy storage, Fundamentals of solar photo voltaic conversion, Solar cells, Solar PV Systems, and Solar PV applications.

MODULE 3: WIND ENERGY [6 hours]
Wind data and energy estimation, Betz limit, Site selection for wind farms – characteristics, Wind resource assessment, Horizontal axis wind turbine–components, Vertical axis wind turbine, Wind turbine generators and their performance, Hybrid systems, Environmental issues- Applications.

MODULE 4: BIO-ENERGY [6 hours]
Bioresources, Biomass direct combustion, thermochemical conversion, biochemical conversion mechanical conversion, Biomass gasifier, Types of biomass gasifiers, Cogeneration, Pyrolysis, Biogas plants, Digesters, Biodiesel production, Ethanol production, Applications.

MODULE 5: HYDROGEN ENERGY [6 hours]
Properties of hydrogen, methods of hydrogen production, steam reforming, Hydrogen production from methane decomposition, coal, and biomass, Introduction to hydrogen storage, underground hydrogen storage, fundamentals of hydrogen compression and expansion, Fundamentals and thermodynamics of absorption based hydrogen storage, metal hydrides, types of metal hydrides, metal hydride based systems design, Use of hydrogen in internal combustion engines, fuel cells

MODULE 6: OCEAN AND GEOTHERMAL ENERGY [6 hours]
Small hydro, Tidal energy, Wave energy, Open and closed OTEC Cycles and its Limitations Geothermal energy, Geothermal energy sources, Types of geothermal power plants, Applications, Environmental impact.

Course Objective

1 .

To know the present status of the Indian and global energy scenario.

2 .

To learn the various solar energy technologies and their applications and to educate the various wind energy technologies.

3 .

To explore the various bio-energy and hydrogen energy technologies.

4 .

To study the ocean and geothermal technologies

Course Outcome

1 .

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1. Explain the Indian and global energy scenario
2. Compare various solar energy technologies and identify their applications
3. Infer wind data and compare multiple wind energy systems.
4. Examine various bio-energy technologies and identify their application.
5. All the aspects of the hydrogen energy value chain, including production methods from hydrocarbons & renewables and their usage in different applications
6. Interpret ocean and geothermal energy conversion technologies.
